Before going out and trying your luck with finding constellations, there are
a few things you should know.
Tombstone-Specific
| The north-south streets in Tombstone don't point north and south. If you
face what Tombstone thinks is north, true north is a little to your left.
Tombstone north is actually NNE (or thereabouts). |
| If you go "off the beaten path" to find a darker spot, remember so do the coyotes, javelinas, rattlesnakes and scorpions, all of which can be quite active at night.
Although they are not by nature a danger to humans, they can and will defend
themselves if they think it's necessary, and they generally win. |
Wherever You Are
| If you're going to use a flashlight, use one with a red filter, or buy some red nail polish and
paint the lens red. You don't have to do this, but if you don't, every time
you use the flashlight you'll have to allow your eyes time to re-adjust. |
| Your biggest problem in identifying constellations is that they are, in
the sky, a lot bigger than what you'd expect from diagrams and star charts. |
